Design Diaries: Lessons from the World of Creativity!

If you haven't already noticed, I have a secret passion for writing. Within these blogs, I'll be sharing a multitude of stories - from reflections on life and design to the ups and downs of my entrepreneurial journey. My hope is that by sharing these experiences, they may resonate with and inspire someone else on their own path. Facebook memories reminded me this past Friday right before our weekly team meeting that we had just completed this project. Below you can see the before, process, and after.

*Takes Deep Breath* I thought this project was going to take me out, quite literally. I felt like it might be the end of my design journey. It was one of those situations where it seemed like everything that could go wrong, did. But one thing I've always held onto is my commitment to operating with integrity, and that kept me going.

From the ashes of that challenging project, we've risen stronger. It pushed us to implement more robust business practices and policies, especially when it comes to renovations and the overall client experience.

  1. Contractor Selection: We've become more meticulous in our contractor vetting process. Ensuring we go above and beyond in due diligence and checking references, and verifying that they carry the necessary insurance with ample coverage.

  2. Training and Expertise: We've recognized the importance of having a team with the right training and experience, especially when dealing with complex cabinetry projects.

  3. Streamlined Workflow: A significant lesson learned was not starting construction until all plumbing fixtures have arrived at the site and undergone a thorough quality inspection. This has helped us avoid delays and ensure a smoother process.

Left to Right: Amanda Watson, Kendra Benson, President of Steinway Gavin English, and myself.

Now, I could go on about the details, but that's not the primary reason I'm sharing this story today. It's been a year since that project, and my design journey has taken us to new heights, filled with fresh lessons and opportunities that have my mind blown. It's a bit like everything is simultaneously falling apart and coming together, and that's what I want to dive into.

If you've been following my Instagram, you're probably aware that I've spent the past week in the vibrant heart of New York City, visiting the legendary Steinway Factory. It's been an incredible experience where I delved into the rich history of this iconic brand and witnessed the intricate craftsmanship that goes into making a Steinway piano. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of installing one of these masterpieces in a client's home soon.

However, what struck me most during this visit was the sheer persistence of Steinway as a business, even before the era of modern technologies. I couldn't help but reflect on how many times they must have pivoted when faced with challenges or when something wasn't working.

But wait, there's more! Do you all remember the newsletter titled "A Seat at the Table"? Well, it was at that very table where I had the honor of meeting the current president of the Decorative Furnishings Association, and she extended a special invitation to their upcoming summit. This summit was scheduled to take place the day after my Steinway Factory tour, and my stars continued to align. It was another opportunity to be in the midst of industry leaders and furniture manufacturers. But that's not the focus of this newsletter.

This time last year I genuinely believed my design dream was slipping away. I had even re-entered the realm of full-time employment. It's hard to put into words, but I can only attribute everything that has transpired to God’s grace. With an incredible team and a dream that burns brightly, giving up has never been an option. When there's a fire within you, you keep fueling it. I firmly believe I haven't come this far for it to falter.

As I navigate this journey of constant evolution, I'm continually reminded that the breadcrumbs always lead me back to design and the artistry that fuels my passion.

This note was an additional nudge to put pen to paper. I’ll be back next week to talk about my new role as Professional Development Director of the American Society of Interior Designers- Texas Gulf Coast Chapter.
